Great Pyrenees or Pyrenean sheepdog?

The Great Pyrenees - Pyrenean Mountain Dog -belongs to the family of sheepdogs and herding dogs. It is a guarding breed belonging to FCI breed group II. It is a large herding dog. Excellent bodyguard and reliable guardian of children.

Mountain dog breed is a term generally used to describe dogs from a particular type of mountain region. Most mountain dog breeds have long been used as herding dogs, instinctively watching over flocks of sheep, herds of cattle or other animals and protecting them from predators such as wolves, bears and thieves. It can still do this today and many people still choose the Pyrenean mountain dog for this purpose.

It likes to be close to its owners at all times, where it can keep an eye on its territory. It is at ease with dogs, cats and other animals living under the same roof, and even enjoys the company of others. He is a loving, fearless and family-friendly dog.

It is not recommended for indoor housing. Like sheepdogs, Pyrenees Mountain Dogs need space and, above all, a large garden where they can fulfil their needs both physically and mentally.

It is vigilant in guarding the boundaries of its territory. He is very distrustful of strangers. The important thing is that he is treated as part of the family and can participate in all activities with us.

Training as a guard dog is not recommended, as he can reliably perform effective house guarding on his own, thanks to his instinctive gifts (genes).

He is very perceptive and can pick up new tasks quickly, but tends to override instructions and obey especially when it makes sense. He is reluctant to carry out tasks that make no sense to him. This makes him very different from German Shepherds and Belgian Shepherds, who blindly obey human commands. Nevertheless, like other guarding and protection breeds, they are well worth training. As with other large and medium-sized sheepdogs, they treat the weak and the fallen (older people, children) with special care, in accordance with the oft-mentioned law of the pack. He does not even think of using his physical strength against them.

Fortunately, there are those who choose this breed to guard their own animals in an authentic environment. A puppy of good blood instinctively prefers to be close to livestock. He sees them as his own pack and likes to mingle with them. Of course, it is best to do this alone, preferably with older puppies, from whom he can learn, as this is the most natural state for him. As a result, the Pyrenean Mountain Dog is one of the rare breeds that tolerates "herding" relatively well, similar to some guarding sheepdogs.

What makes someone a reliable breeder?

Choosing a trustworthy breeder is a key step in adopting a healthy and well-behaved sheepdog into your home. The first step is to find a breeder who is open to all questions and willing to introduce you to the parents of the puppies and provide the necessary health certificates and documentation. It's important that the breeder is passionate about dog breeds and aims to breed healthy and well-tempered dogs. A good breeder will always give new owners some follow-up support, helping them with training advice and health care. Testimonials and positive feedback from other dog owners are also a valuable source of information in choosing a reliable breeder.
